(QNO) - The area of Ngoc Linh ginseng has been enlarged in Quang Nam province by the local residents and businesses. The provincial project of Ngoc Linh ginseng conservation and development until 2030 was agreed by the Government of Vietnam in 2015. Accordingly, this species is planted in seven communes in Nam Tra Mi district consisting of Tra Nam, Tra Linh, Tra Cang, Tra Tap, Tra Don, Tra Dơn, Tra Leng. The project covers an area of 15,000ha of forest land with thick humus layers suitable for the growing and development of Ngoc Linh ginseng. With an annual average yield from 200 to 300ha, Ngoc Linh ginseng becomes the key tree for the province’s economic development. In addition, the locals’ awareness has changed. They protect forests and take full advantage of land area under the canopy to plant ginseng to improve their income.

The geographical indication for the Ngoc Linh ginseng was licensed in August 2016 by the Office of Intellectual Property under Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology. Besides, Quang Nam province was financed by the Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology to carry out two research topics: the conservation and building of the original variety of Ngoc Linh ginseng, application of the internet of living things to control and protect the Ngoc Linh ginseng. Quang Nam province and Nam Tra Mi district have promulgated support policies to attract investors into this field. Expectedly, every hectare of ginseng after 5 years of being planted will bring about VND 30-50 billion.
Quang Nam province will ask the Government to recognize Ngoc Linh ginseng as a national product to protect the ginseng planters, production, processing, consuming and development. As Ngoc Linh ginseng becomes a national product, new technologies will be applied to ginseng cultivation and production processes to improve the quality and productivity of the ginseng. Recently, the Prime Minister of Vietnam has requested the agencies, departments and localities to choose and develop some products from the local endemic precious medicinal herbs with high economic values. This is a favourable chance for Ngoc Linh ginseng development as well as for the local economic effectiveness.
