Green transport in Hoi An

(QNO) - A seminar on roads for bikes and bike sharing in Hoi An city (Quang Nam province) has just taken place in Hoi An. The event was jointly held by Hoi An city and HealthBridge Canada in Vietnam.

At the event, representatives from HealthBridge Vietnam and Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ, Germany) talked about the priority given to bikes in some countries in the world. They also discussed the pilot project on sharing bikes and the plan on using bikes for travelling in Hoi An city. The discussion focused on the transport infrastructure, safety for bikers, public bike parks, and the programme on low-cost or free bike sharing in Hoi An. Accordingly, Hai Ba Trung street in the city is planned for bikes. Hoi An makes efforts to increase the number of bikers by 40% by 2025.

The targets of the project on low-cost/free bike sharing and the plan on using bikes for travelling are road traffic safety and public healthcare via green transport; and bike is a good solution.

The project won the prize of Global Urban Mobility in Germany in 2018, and has been carried out in Hoi An city since then with the support of GIZ.
 
The project will contribute to the environment protection, socioeconomic development and equality in society. It is also the first model of public-private cooperation in Hoi An where all bikes in the city are in a system of the low-cost/free sharing programme.

Another seminar on the transport development via bikes and the low-cost/free bike sharing programme was held by Hoi An city, HealthBridge Vietnam and GIZ in October 2018.

According to Vice Chairman of the Hoi An city People’s Committee Nguyen Van Son, the project contributes to the development of Hoi An, a sustainable green living environment, an ecological cultural tourist city.

Hoi An is the only city to be awarded the prize for the planning of the ancient quarter and walking space that can promote the values of heritages for tourism development. Hoi An is planned and developed to become a sustainable ecological- cultural- tourist city. It will be the centre for provincial tourism development, the core of the tourist triangle Hoi An- My Son- Cham Islands, the centre for cultures and festivals at a national level, which is able to host international events and respond to climate change.
