Ba Cho Duoc Festival

(QNO) - Ba Cho Duoc (Mrs Cho Duoc) Cart Welcoming Festival is a specific cultural feature bringing spiritual and religious factors of Quang Nam province’s residents. It has been organised in two days 10th and 11th January of Lunar year at Lang Ba (Ba temple) in Phuoc Am hamlet, Binh Trieu commune, Thang Binh district. The main part of the festival are praying ceremony for safety and luck for local residents, commenmoration ceremony and folk art - sports performances…

According to old legend, Ba Cho Duoc’s name is Nguyen Thi Cua, born on 25th February 1800 in a rich family in My Hoa commune, Dien Phuoc district (now is Dai Cuong commune, Dai Loc district), Quang Nam province) and died in 1817. In 1852, she incanated to be a beautiful young girl and sold water and traditional medicines to help poor people in Phuoc Toan village (now is Phuoc Am hamlet). In the 5th year of King Tu Duc reign, one day, Ba Cho Duoc she went around the hamlet for sightseeing and realized that this hamlet located on a good earth region, the landscape is very beautiful, therefore, she wanted to build a market overhere. Many people gathered here to do business and named Cho Duoc (Duoc market).

Ba Cho Duoc’s significant works brought new and properous life to Phuoc Am hamlet. In order to remember and thank whats she had done for this hamlet, after her death, the local residents called her “Ba (Mrs) Cho Duoc” and built up a temple to worship her. King Thanh Thai recognized Ba Cho Duoc’s great contributions to the developments of the hamlet as well as the country and awarded her two  honourable titles: The Middle Class Lord and the High Class Lord for “Loyal and doing good things people”. Many years later, the local people began to organise this festival to remember Ba Cho Duoc and the festival has became a annual spiritual and religious activity of Phuoc Am hamlet.

This festival organized in the evening only. After finishing the main ceremony held at Ba temple, all food and the copies of the Title Award certificates on Ba Cho Duoc will be put on a colourful decorated ox carts and move around the hamlet. Some folk artisans in the hamlet perform traditional songs, dances or short plays about the  Vietnamese’s victories in the strugle against the aggressive forces in the past.

The Ba Palanqueen is gilded and red painted chair covered by red vervet cloth. It is welcomed and carried from the Ba temple by 6 strong young men and many elders, patriotic personalities and local governmental officers walking at two sides.

The main activities after Ba Welcoming Ceremony are lion dance, boat race, Hat boi (Vietnamese traditional plays) and sports…Particularly, the boat race in Truong Giang river attracted many boats from other districts in Quang Nam province such as Hoi An, Dai Loc, Duy Xuyen, Nui Thanh….Many people from other localities came to participate and enjoy the festival. These activities make the festival more interesting and noisier…
