Responsible and sustainable tourism in Quang Nam province


(QNO) -  A workshop on “Responsible and sustainable tourism development” has just been organized in Hoi An city by the Labour Newspaper in association with Quang Nam People’s Committee, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) office in Hanoi.

With the advantages of the heritages, nature and supports of UNESCO, ILO, Foundation for international Development Relief (FIDR)…, Quang Nam has developed many models of responsible and sustainable tourism early, such as Bho Hoong and Dhroong  community-based tourism villages in Dong Giang district (of the project of “Strengthening tourism activities in the remote districts on the mainland of Quang Nam” funded by  the Government of Luxembourg and carried out by ILO and Quang Nam province since June, 2011, My Son (Duy Xuyen district) and Triem Tay community-based tourism deployed by Dien Ban town People’s Committee, ILO and UNESCO.

In addition, Quang Nam also focuses on developing fine arts and handicraft products, traditional villages and becomes one of the first provinces using authentic seal “Crafted in Quang Nam” for the local fine art and handicraft products. This aims to help tourists choose Quang Nam genuine products. It is also very important to introduce, propagate and develop products of the craft villages in Quang Nam, create more jobs for local residents, contribute on local economic development.

At the workshop, Vice Chairman of the Quang Nam People’s Committee Nguyen Chin said that the provincial leaders and people understood the heritages conservation for tourism development. Besides, tourists’ awareness of sustainable tourism development is raised when they take part in this tour in Quang Nam. According to Charlie Bodwell- technical advisor of ILO office in Bangkok (Thailand), responsible and sustainable tourism is a right strategy because it  connects 3 factors: cultural conservation, environmental protection and economic development for medium and small- sized businesses. Now, the most necessity is to invest into the tourism employees’ skill and knowledge to upgrade the service quality in the coming time”.
