Permanent Vice Chairman of Quang Nam People’s Committee Huynh Khanh Toan has just had a working meeting with the delegation from the Taipei Cultural and Economic Office (TCEO) in Ho Chi Minh city (Vietnam), led by its Director General Kuang-chung Liang, to prepare for the coming forum.

Taiwanese enterprises in the province

There are now 16 Taiwanese FDI (foreign direct investment) enterprises in Quang Nam with a total investment of over 203 million USD. However, according to Permanent Vice Chairman Toan, this investment (accounting for only over 3.6% of the total FDI in the province) is still modest as compared with the provincial potentials.

At the meeting, Mr Toan hoped the TCEO in Ho Chi Minh city to be a bridge between Taiwanese enterprises and Quang Nam. He also reminded of seven priority areas including automotive mechanical support industry; textile; leather and footwear; consumer and household goods; civil electricity and refrigeration industries; wood and sand products; animal feed and seafood manufacturing; tourism; industrial parks infrastructure. Besides, some such cooperation fields as human resource training, education and training, science and technology, health and agriculture were also suggested at the meeting.

Opportunities for attracting businesses

Reportedly, Taiwan’s total investment in Vietnam is about 30.5 billion USD. Mr  Liang expressed his impression on the Quang Nam leader’s receptiveness and openness. He also realized the provincial potentials for Taiwan’s businesses, especially in the time of the Trans-Pacific Partnership  trade agreement signed, and the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian nations) Economic Community established. The over 20-year relationship between Taiwan and Vietnam is a steady foundation so that Quang Nam province can call for Taiwanese investment into the province.

According to Mrs Duong Ngoc Phuong- Vice managing director of Weicovina Co., Ltd- representative of a Taiwanese business in Quang Nam province, this business will co-ordinate with the province to call Taiwanese businesses to the International Trade Forum in coming time to clearly learn about Quang Nam province with its preferential and investment attraction policies.
