(QNO) - The system of public bicycle sharing in Hoi An is considered as the most modern in Vietnam. All 100 bicycles distributed at 11 bike stops are equipped with the Global Positioning System (GPS) and QR code locks connected to a mobile application.
The Hoi An public bicycle sharing system is under the project on establishing comprehensive bicycle plan and free/low-cost bicycle sharing programme in Hội An city. It is carried out by the Hoi An city People’s Committee, HealthBridge Foundation of Canada, German Development Agency, World Resources Institute (USA), and Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI).
The system comes into operation on the occasion of World Bicycle Day (June 3) and have a 3-month trial. The numbers of bicycles and bike stops will respectively reach to 160 and 21 in July 2019.
Everyone who uses bicycles of the system will be provided with a mobile application to unlock the bike. After the first 30 minutes of using the bike free, they have to pay VND20,000 an hour through an e-pay system. If someone has no smart phone, they can buy a ticket for this service at one of the QIQ agencies in Hoi An.
Hopefully, the system is a solution to urban transport such as traffic jam and traffic safety. It also helps reduce the amount of CO2 and CO gases and better the quality of the living environment here.
The project costs 178.487 Euros, including building a master plan on traffic development by using bicycles, a public bicycle sharing system, and the infrastructure for bicycles.
To introduce to the public the bicycle sharing system and the advantages of the QR code lock, the games of cycling and unlocking the QR code lock are organized in Hoi An on June 2. The games also aim to encourage the locals and tourists to use bicycles for a green and clean environment in Hoi An.
