1. Kazimierz Kwiatkowshi (Kazik) and Hoi An

Kazik was a Polish architect working at My Son Sanctuary in the programme of ancient relic restoration and reconstruction signed by Vietnam and Poland. He was first arranged to stay in Da Nang city.

One summer afternoon when it was too hot, he wanted to return to Da Nang from My Son Sanctuary sooner to go to the beach. But his Vietnamese co-workers suggested him going to Cua Dai beach of Hoi An city. It was the first time he had gone to Hoi An. He was amazed at the ancient town and especially interested in its ancient houses.

Later, he moved to Hoi An and spent time learning more about Hoi An and the ancient houses with high cultural and historical values. At that time, he lived in a small room with poorer conditions compared to the one in Da Nang but he was very satisfied.

2. Kazik and world cultural heritages

For Hoi An residents, Kazik was very friendly. He was considered as a close friend to people living in the ancient quarter. They often helped him with the information about the ancient quarter and relics there.

Returning to Poland, Kazid tried his best to introduce Hoi An to foreign governments, cultural organizations, travel agencies. More importantly, he took an important part to help the complex of Hue monuments, Hoi An ancient town and My Son Sanctuary become UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

On the occasion of Kazik’s death anniversary, a relief sculpture of Kazik was built at Hoi An city’s centre and named Kazik Park in March 2007. This is the place where people of Hoi An commemorate Kazik.
