VOV.VN - A further 659,900 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine arrived at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on July 29.
This represents the sixth batch of COVID-19 vaccines the Vietnam Vaccine Joint Stock Company (VNVC) has purchased from AstraZeneca under the 2020 contract signed with the vaccine manufacturer.
The new shipment raised the total number of doses AstraZeneca has supplied VNVC under the contract to 3.8 million.
Roughly 9.3 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have so far been delivered to Vietnam through the VNVC contract, the COVAX mechanism, and various donations from other nations.
Nguyen Nam Lien, director of the Department of Planning and Finance under the Ministry of Health (MoH), underscored the necessity of COVID-19 vaccines as a means of containing the spread of the pandemic and meeting the goal of achieving herd immunity by early next year.
AstraZeneca is the first COVID-19 vaccine to be licensed for emergency use in Vietnam. It is being used for the national vaccination drive.
According to the MoH, more than 5.3 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered nationwide as of July 29.
Vietnam aims to inoculate 70% of its population, or about 75 million people, against COVID-19 by early 2022.
