Hoi An city, Quang Nam province strives to become a bicycle city. It contributes to the development of Hoi An as a sustainable urban area of eco-cultural tourism.
Bicycle sharing programme
In 2019, Hoi An officially launched the programs of using sustainable and environmentally friendly means of transport and sharing bicycles in the city.
This programme was coordinated by the Hoi An city, HealthBridge Vietnam (HBV) and the German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ)/ Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative.
According to Advisor for GIZ’s Traffic Policy, Jan Rickmeyyer, Hoi An has a huge chance of taking advantage of the bicycle sharing program to become a non-motorized transport city.
Advantage of using bicycles
Hoi An hopes the number of people who use bikes in the city will increase to 15% by 2025 and reach 30% by 2030.
Hoi An used to be a city with a relatively high number of people using bicycles with a low traffic accident rate compared to other urban cities in Vietnam.
Many tourists also recognized Hoi An as the best place for traveling by bicycle with several small flowery streets, roads under the tree canopy along the rivers to Cua Dai and An Bang beaches, or straight concrete roads through green fields and beautiful clean villages.
Hoi An was voted as one of 5 great cycling cities in Vietnam.
